What is sodium bicarbonate and what effect does it have?
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) increases the body's acid buffer capacity, which is crucial for sporting performance. During intense anaerobic exercise involving lactic acid, such as sprints, intervals or steep climbs, increased amounts of lactate are produced. This release H+ ions (protons), which lower the pH value in the muscles and lead to hyperacidity. The result is muscle burning, fatigue and a drop in performance. Targeted sodium bicarbonate intake increases the buffering capacity of the blood, stabilizes the pH value and delays the accumulation of, thus enabling improved performance and recovery.

Scientifically proven effect

The performance-enhancing effect of sodium bicarbonate is well documented scientifically and is classified as an A-class supplement with the highest level of evidence by leading institutions such as the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Swiss Sports Nutrition Society (SSNS). SPONSER® Bicarb Caps deliver this proven substance in a precise, capsule-based form that is easy to dose, individually adjustable and optimally tolerated.

Who are BICARB CAPS suitable for?

SPONSER® Bicarb Caps are designed for ambitious athletes looking to enhance their anaerobic performance. They are particularly suitable for:

  • sprinting and middle-distance running (athletics, swimming and rowing)
  • Mountain bike cross-country and eliminator races
  • Nordic and alpine skiing
  • Team sports involving explosive and repetitive exertion, such as football, rugby and hockey.

The recommended total dose is 0.3 g of sodium bicarbonate per kilogram of body weight. One capsule contains 1 g of sodium bicarbonate

Example: for a 70 kg body weight, 21 g corresponds to 21 g capsules (0.3 g/kg x 70 kg)

Take the required number of capsules over a period of at least 30 minutes, within the time window of approximately 90 to 60 minutes before the start of the competition (for example, take one third of the capsules at 90,75 and 60 minutes before the start). Take the capsules with 0.5-1 liter of water. Extending the intake period to 120-60 minutes before the start of the competition may improve.

Notes on tolerability

  • Test the tolerabilty of the protocol outside of training.
  • Use it in a competition-simulated situation.
  • If you experience any issues, try variant 2 of the soda-loading application protocol «Lactat Buffer + Bicarb Caps»
  • Alternatively, reduce the number of capsules by approximately one third. The effect will be considerably lower, but tolerance will usually be better.
  • Taking a small snack containing carbohydrates significantly improves tolerance.

For further application protocols, see also SPONSER® soda-loading dosage protocol for bicarbonate supplementation.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced and varied diet or a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended intake. This product is not intended for daily consumption. Do not take them at the same time as milk or dairy products. Gastrointestinal complaints may occur in individual cases. Each capsule contains 240 mg of sodium. A high salt intake is not suitable for individuals with high blood pressure, impaired kidney function, asthma, or salt sensitivity, as well as pregnant women, breastfeeding women, children and adolescents. These individuals are advised not to take this product.

+ Which types of athletes are Bicarb Caps intended for?

The accumulation of lactate during high-intensity anaerobic exercise can contribute to muscular acidification and lead to a decline in performance. Sodium bicarbonate increases the body’s acid buffer capacity and can thus delay the onset of muscular acidosis during intense, anaerobic exercise with high lactate production. At elite level, this can be decisive for placings or qualification. SPONSER® Bicarb Caps are designed for ambitious athletes seeking to improve their anaerobic performance, particularly in disciplines characterised by repeated high-intensity efforts and high lactate production. Typical examples include sprinting, middle-distance running, swimming, rowing, mountain bike XCO and XCE events, nordic and alpine skiing, interval training and team sports that call for explosive efforts.

+ What is the scientific basis for the use of sodium bicarbonate?

The performance-enhancing effect of sodium bicarbonate is scientifically well documented. Sodium bicarbonate is classified as an A-category supplement – the highest level of evidence – by organisations such as the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Swiss Society for Sports Nutrition (SSNS). Its performance-enhancing effects are particularly relevant during high-intensity exercise lasting up to approximately ten minutes. Typical examples include sprint and middle-distance athletics, swimming and rowing. Sports characterised by repeated high-intensity efforts and varying intensities can also benefit from improved acid buffering capacity. These include football, rugby, hockey, cycling time trials, triathlon, CrossFit and combat sports.

+ How should Bicarb Caps be dosed and taken?

The recommended total dose is 0.3 g of sodium bicarbonate per kilogram of body weight, ideally taken approximately 60–90 minutes before competition. Individual tolerance should always be carefully tested in advance. To optimise tolerability, intake may also be staggered. One option is to consume an initial portion several hours before competition, ideally together with a carbohydrate-rich meal, followed by a second intake shortly before the start. Further details are available in the soda-loading dosage protocol. This staggered approach may improve gastrointestinal tolerability and prolong the buffering effect. As with all bicarbonate protocols, individual tolerance must be thoroughly tested under conditions similar to those of the competition.

+ Why is an individual intake protocol important?

Competitions vary considerably depending on the discipline, the competition schedule and the type of effort required. While some competitions allow sufficient time to structure a proper nutrition and supplementation strategy, others leave only a limited preparation window immediately before the start. The crucial factor in this is when lactate production peaks and when maximum buffering capacity needs to be available. Furthermore, practical considerations such as pre-competition nervousness, loss of appetite or logistical constraints may influence the way in which the protocol is put into practice. For this reason, athletes are advised to establish an individual, discipline-specific intake protocol together with their coaches and support team in order to maximise the potential benefits of sodium bicarbonate supplementation during high-intensity competition efforts.

+ Which sodium bicarbonate products does SPONSER offer?

With Bicarb Caps, SPONSER® offers a precise, capsule-based sodium bicarbonate supplement designed for easy and individualised dosing. Each capsule contains 1 g of sodium bicarbonate, allowing intake to be adjusted according to body weight and distributed across staggered doses to optimise tolerability. SPONSER® Bicarb Caps were developed according to scientific findings and tested in collaboration with Swiss Cycling – in line with the SPONSER® philosophy: tested, trusted, proven.

+ Which products and ingredients complement Bicarb Caps?

SPONSER® Lactat Buffer allows sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate to be consumed in liquid form approximately 3–4 hours before competition. Combined with a carbohydrate-rich snack or small meal, this approach may further improve tolerability. Ideally, the intake is divided into two phases: an initial preload using Lactat Buffer several hours before competition, followed by Bicarb Caps closer to the start in order to further increase extracellular buffering capacity. Additional information and practical dosage calculations are available in the soda-loading dosage protocol.
